Eye Surgeons of Indiana participates in many humanitarian missions throughout the world. Our doctors and surgical team are proud of their efforts to bring quality eye care, including modern cataract surgery, to patients around the globe. Recent missions are detailed below.

Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation

Eye Surgeons of Indiana has been a proud donor to the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation and title presenter to their annual Through the Looking Glass Gala. The mission of the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation (IBCF) is to invest in children with visual impairments so each child will thrive in school and daily life. IBCF is a philanthropic foundation that financially supports the unique work of the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Foundation Fighting Blindness Visionwalk

Eye Surgeons of Indiana is honored to support the annual Foundation Fighting Blindness Indianapolis VisionWalk. Since its inception in 2006, the VisionWalk has raised over $64 million, fueling critical research aimed at developing preventions, treatments, and cures for eye diseases that lead to blindness.

This year’s mission took place in February. The site location was in San Pedro Sula. A group of approximately 40 volunteers, including 12 optometrists, provided examinations and eyeglasses for over 3000 patients. Dr. Dierker was part of this team. The surgical team performed approximately 60 cataract surgeries. We are proud of our continued involvement in providing eye care to the wonderful people of Honduras.

Dr. Dierker and the surgical team completed another successful mission to this impoverished Central American country. This year’s mission was based in Choloma, just north of San Pedro Sula. Eleven optometrists, aided by students from the Illinois College of Optometry and support staff, were able to provide eye care for more than 4000 people. The surgical team that performed 48 cataract surgeries. VOSH Indiana has sponsored this mission for over 30 years.

Guatemala

Dr. Orr led a medical mission to the Lake Amatitlan area, near Guatemala City. This area is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Mitch, which devastated Central America in 1998. Working with Dr. Elry Orozco, a local Lutheran physician and pastor, Dr. Orr and Dr. Brian Duvall (Seattle, WA) provided eye care and glasses for approximately 160 local residents. This mission, sponsored by CALMS (Central American Lutheran Mission Society), also aims to spread the Word of Christ throughout the region.
