Dr. Waltz was recently asked by the Video Journal of Ophthalmology to talk about the process of neuroadaptation in eye surgery. Neuroadaptation is the ability for the brain to adapt to new stimuli. This phenomenon is common after eye surgery such as LASIK and cataract surgery with multifocal intraocular lenses (IOL’s). Neuroadaptation occurs in adults and has been studied extensively in stroke recovery and addiction. Dr. Waltz provides a unique perspective on the subject, as he had a multifocal IOL implanted in both eyes after having cataract surgery in 1998.
