What Is a Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is an innovative intraocular lens implant that can be adjusted after surgery using a specialized office-based UV light device. Unlike traditional lenses, the LAL allows fine-tuning of your eyesight postoperatively, offering a level of precision that can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses in most situations.

Why Choose Eye Surgeons of Indiana?

Eye Surgeons of Indiana has a long history of advanced surgical care across Indianapolis, Greenfield, Anderson, Greenwood, Lafayette, Muncie, and Kokomo. LAL Surgery What to Expect

Preoperative Evaluation

Before surgery, our team conducts a detailed examination to determine your candidacy, measure your eye’s anatomy, and discuss your visual goals. This includes imaging, corneal mapping, and a review of existing conditions.

Lens Implantation

During cataract surgery, the cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with the Light Adjustable Lens. The procedure typically lasts 10–30 minutes per eye and uses advanced techniques for minimal discomfort.

Postoperative Adjustments

Several weeks after implantation, your doctor will determine the correct timing. Ultraviolet (UV) light is applied to the lens in a non-invasive, office-based process. This allows the curvature of the lens to be adjusted, fine-tuning your vision according to your preferences for distance, intermediate, or near tasks.

Final Vision Lock-In

Once your ideal vision is achieved, a final UV treatment “locks in” the lens adjustments, creating a stable, long-lasting result customized just for you.

How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

The LAL contains microscopic light-sensitive particles called macromers. When targeted with UV light, these particles polymerize, changing the lens shape. This predictable, controlled adjustment reshapes your lens to match your desired prescription. Unlike traditional intraocular lenses, this technology allows post-surgical personalization, offering patients a level of precision previously unavailable.

Customizing Your Vision After Surgery

The post-surgical adjustment process gives patients unique control over their eyesight. Options include:

  • Optimizing distance vision in both eyes
  • Monovision (one eye set for distance, the other for near)
  • Modified monovision to balance intermediate and close-up tasks

Our surgeons guide you through this process to ensure your vision aligns with your daily needs, hobbies, and lifestyle goals.
