A Breakthrough in Eye Surface Healing

Our practice, Eye Surgeons of Indiana, specializes in advanced treatments for the front surface of the eye, and Prokera is one of the most transformative technologies available. This treatment helps the eye recover when irritation, inflammation, or injury has disrupted the delicate tissues that protect your vision. Many patients experience rapid soothing relief, improved comfort, and protection against long-term scarring.

What Is Prokera?

Prokera is a combination medical device that contains the only FDA-cleared cryopreserved amniotic membrane for treating ocular surface disease. The amniotic membrane is held in a comfortable ring that sits on the eye like a large contact lens.

The amniotic membrane carries natural anti-inflammatory, anti-scarring, and regenerative properties. When placed on the eye, it calms inflammation, protects healing tissue, and helps restore a smooth, healthy corneal surface.

Why Choose Eye Surgeons of Indiana for Prokera?

We take a whole-person, highly personalized approach to treating the ocular surface. Patients choose us because:

  • Experienced cornea specialists and dry eye experts personally place and manage every Prokera device.
  • We use high-resolution imaging and diagnostic testing to determine whether Prokera is the right treatment and to monitor healing.
  • Our team understands that pain, light sensitivity, and vision changes affect your entire life—not just your eyes.
  • We prioritize comfort, gentle technique, clear communication, and close follow-up.
  • Your healing is guided by experts who understand the science behind Prokera, but also the person behind the symptoms.

How Prokera Helps Heal the Eye

The power of Prokera comes from its cryopreserved amniotic membrane, which contains a unique biological complex known as HC-HA/PTX3: a structure conserved only through the cryopreservation process. Research shows this complex helps:

  • Quiet inflammation
  • Reduce immune overactivity
  • Prevent scar tissue formation
  • Promote healthy corneal cell regrowth
  • Speed natural tissue repair

These healing actions help your cornea recover more effectively than with artificial tears, steroid drops, or standard bandage contact lenses alone.

What Conditions Can Prokera Treat?

Eye doctors use Prokera to treat a wide range of diseases and injuries affecting the eye surface, including:

  • Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)
  • Severe or chronic dry eye disease
  • Corneal erosions or recurrent erosions
  • Corneal chemical burns
  • Persistent eye surface defects
  • Corneal scarring
  • Post-surgical irritation
  • Ocular stem cell deficiency
  • Infected or inflamed corneal surfaces

If your eye has been unable to heal on its own, Prokera may help restore normal structure, comfort, and clarity.

During Treatment What to Expect

Prokera feels similar to a large, soft contact lens. You may be aware of the device, but it should not be painful. Here is what you can expect:

Insertion

Your doctor places the Prokera ring on the eye in a quick, gentle procedure. Some patients find it mildly foreign at first, which improves over time.

Treatment Duration

Most patients wear Prokera for three to five days for optimal healing. In highly inflamed eyes (“hot eyes”), the membrane may dissolve in three to five days. Your doctor will remove the device when the membrane has dissolved or your cornea has healed sufficiently.

After Insertion

Your eyelid may be partially taped closed to protect the healing tissue. While the device is in place:

  • Avoid swimming or exposing your eyes to water
  • Do not rub your eye
  • Keep your eyes closed tightly when showering
  • Do not attempt to remove the device
  • Do not drive or operate machinery
  • Use only the drops or medications prescribed

A follow-up visit is typically scheduled within three to five days.

Why Cryopreserved Amniotic Membrane Matters

Not all amniotic membranes are the same. Heat-dehydrated membranes lose many of the biologic components that support healing. Prokera’s cryopreserved tissue:

  • Supports rapid, natural corneal healing
  • Reduces the risk of scar tissue formation
  • Helps resolve chronic inflammation
  • Promotes stronger, healthier epithelial regrowth
  • Maintains its full biologic structure, including the healing component HC-HA/PTX3

This is why Prokera is preferred for complex or recurring eye surface problems.

Is Prokera Safe?

Yes. The tissue is extensively tested and processed by Certified Tissue Bank Specialists following FDA and American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) guidelines.

Donor tissue comes only from:

  • Healthy mothers delivering via planned C-section
  • Participants in fully voluntary donation programs
  • Donors who have passed screenings for social history, medical conditions, and infectious disease markers

How Are the Amniotic Membranes Collected?

Amniotic membranes used in Prokera come from women who voluntarily choose to donate their stem cell-rich placental tissue after a healthy, full-term C-section delivery.
Before donation:

  • Donor mothers undergo thorough screening, including health history, physical evaluation, and infectious disease testing.
  • The processing facility adheres to AATB standards, the highest level of oversight for donated human tissue.
  • Tissue handling follows strict FDA Current Good Tissue Practices (CGTPs).

Only tissue that meets all safety and quality standards is used to create Prokera for your eyes.

Healing After Prokera

Even after the Prokera device is removed, the remaining membrane continues to:

  • Strengthen the corneal surface
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support cell regeneration
  • Improve comfort and vision

Many patients notice benefits that last for weeks or even months.

 Healing time varies depending on:

  • How your eye responds to treatment
  • The severity of your condition
  • Whether inflammation is ongoing
  • Whether scarring is present

Your doctor will explain what to expect based on your unique diagnosis.
