What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This can lead to irritation, redness, blurred vision, and light sensitivity. Beyond discomfort, untreated dry eye can damage the cornea and increase your risk of infection or vision complications.

Preventing Dry Eyes What Are the Meibomian Glands?

The Meibomian glands (pronounced my-BOH-me-an) are tiny oil-producing glands that line your upper and lower eyelids. Their job is to release a healthy, thin oil that spreads across the tear film each time you blink, keeping your tears from evaporating too quickly. When these glands work correctly, they protect the eyes from dryness and inflammation. They’re named after Dr. Heinrich Meibom, the physician who first described them in the 1600s. Keeping these glands healthy is essential for comfortable, stable vision.

What Is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)?

MGD occurs when the eyelid glands that produce protective oils become blocked, inflamed, or stop working properly. This can result in symptoms like dryness, burning, fluctuating vision, and a gritty or tired feeling in the eyes.

Advanced Dry Eye Therapies

IPL

Intense Pulsed Light therapy targets the abnormal blood vessels that contribute to inflammation in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction. This treatment can improve tear quality and reduce chronic irritation, offering lasting relief for many patients.

LLLT (Low Level Light Therapy)

Low-Level Light Therapy applies gentle infrared light to the eyelids, stimulating the meibomian glands and reducing eyelid inflammation. This non-invasive treatment helps restore natural lubrication and reduces dry eye symptoms.

TIXEL

TIXEL therapy uses a thermal pulse technology to gently stimulate the eyelid skin, promoting better gland function and tear production. Patients often experience improvement in dryness, irritation, and overall eye comfort.

TearCare

TearCare is a wearable, heat-and-pressure system applied to the eyelids to unclog blocked meibomian glands. The treatment is performed in-office and restores natural oils to the tear film, reducing chronic dryness and inflammation.

LipiFlow

LipiFlow is an FDA-approved procedure that combines heat and gentle massage to unblock the meibomian glands. It is often recommended for patients whose dry eye is caused by evaporative tear loss and provides results that can last months.

Rinsada

Rinsada is a gentle in-office rinse that removes mucus, debris, and inflammatory material from the tear film and eye surface.

Lacrifill

Lacrifill is a dry eye treatment that uses a biocompatible gel to temporarily block the tear drainage ducts, which helps retain natural tears and moisture on the eye's surface for up to 6 months.

Nulids

NuLids is a gentle, doctor-developed at-home treatment designed to relieve dry eye symptoms and improve overall eyelid health. Used by our Indianapolis team, it helps clear blocked glands, calm inflammation, and restore lasting comfort.

ZEST

ZEST therapy is an advanced treatment that combines eyelid hygiene and gentle stimulation to improve meibomian gland function. This treatment is recommended for patients experiencing persistent dry eye symptoms despite routine care.

Prokera

Prokera is a biologic corneal bandage made from amniotic membrane that promotes healing and reduces inflammation on the ocular surface. It is used for severe dry eye or corneal surface damage and provides a protective environment for recovery.

Risks of Untreated Dry Eye

Left untreated, dry eye can lead to significant complications. Chronic dryness and inflammation may damage the corneal surface, increasing the risk of infection, corneal ulcers, or permanent scarring.

This can impact vision quality and make future procedures, including cataract or refractive surgery, more complicated. Addressing dry eye promptly not only improves comfort but also protects your long-term eye health.
