What Is DMEK?
DMEK is a highly advanced corneal transplant procedure that replaces only the single diseased cell layer of the cornea, the endothelium, and its thin supporting membrane (Descemet’s membrane). This layer is responsible for pumping excess fluid out of the cornea. When the endothelium stops functioning properly, as in Fuchs’ dystrophy or chronic corneal swelling, vision becomes cloudy, hazy, or distorted.
With DMEK, surgeons remove the damaged cells and replace them with an ultrathin sheet of donor tissue, just 10–15 microns thick, about the thickness of plastic wrap. Because the transplant is so anatomically precise, it delivers:
- The clearest potential vision of all corneal transplant methods
- Faster recovery and fewer optical distortions than full-thickness transplants
- A more natural feel to the eye than before surgery
DMEK is considered a standard for treating endothelial disease in patients who are good candidates, something we are very proud to offer our patients at Eye Surgeons of Indiana.
