What Is the Cornea?

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped layer on the front of your eye that helps focus light, so you can see clearly. If your cornea becomes damaged or diseased, treatment options are available to restore your vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of your cornea. At Eye Surgeons of Indiana, we have cornea specialists who can help you.

I've had my surgery and several follow-up procedures completed at Eye Surgeons of Indiana, Indianapolis, and Greenwood. I've been completely amazed at how professional and courteous every single person I've come into contact with has been. I've not had a single experience with less than a 5-star rating. My personal doctors were top-notch. Great personalities, professional, and great at their profession. You can't go wrong.

Patient, J.D.

Am I a Candidate for Cornea Surgery?

Cornea surgery may be appropriate for patients experiencing vision changes, discomfort, or corneal damage that cannot be addressed through medication or non-surgical treatments. Typical candidates may include those with:

  • Corneal scarring or thinning that affects vision
  • Chronic infections or inflammation that damage the corneal tissue
  • Non-healing corneal ulcers
  • Degenerative changes such as Fuchs’ dystrophy
  • Progressive keratoconus (thinning and bulging of the cornea) or other corneal dystrophies

Our cornea specialists carefully evaluate your eyes using advanced imaging and diagnostics to determine whether surgery can improve your vision, relieve symptoms, and support long-term eye health. We work closely with each patient to create a treatment plan that aligns with their vision and lifestyle.

Cornea Surgery, Treatments, and Conditions We Treat

At Eye Surgeons of Indiana, we offer a comprehensive range of corneal surgeries and treatments, allowing our specialists to tailor care to each patient’s unique needs. Whether you have already been diagnosed with a corneal condition or are still exploring the most appropriate treatment option, our cornea specialists will guide you through a detailed evaluation and personalized care plan. Below is a list of corneal conditions we diagnose and treat as part of our full spectrum of corneal care.

Corneal Transplant

A corneal transplant replaces a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy donor cornea. This procedure can restore clarity and improve vision for patients with scarring, thinning, or advanced dystrophies. After you receive your corneal transplant in our surgery center, recovery will include follow-up visits to ensure proper healing and visual outcomes.

DSAEK

DSAEK is a partial-thickness corneal transplant focusing on replacing the innermost layer of the cornea. It is less invasive than full-thickness transplants, allows faster visual recovery, and reduces the risk of complications.

DMEK

DMEK is a highly refined, minimally invasive endothelial transplant procedure that requires even greater technical delicacy than DSAEK. By replacing only the thinnest damaged inner corneal layer, DMEK often provides fast visual improvement and lower rejection rates than traditional corneal transplants or DSAEK.

Neurotrophic Keratitis

This condition occurs when the cornea loses sensitivity and fails to heal properly after injury. Our specialists treat neurotrophic keratitis with advanced therapies, including amniotic membrane grafts and regenerative eye drops to promote healing and restore comfort.

Infectious Keratitis

Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections of the cornea can threaten vision if left untreated. We offer prompt diagnosis and targeted treatment, including antimicrobial therapy, debridement, or surgical interventions to prevent permanent vision loss.

Lamellar Keratectomy

The lamellar keratectomy procedure involves removing specific layers of the cornea affected by scarring, degeneration, or disease. By preserving healthy tissue, this procedure can improve vision while maintaining corneal integrity.

Superficial Keratectomy

Superficial keratectomy treats surface corneal irregularities caused by scarring, dystrophy, or recurrent erosions. This procedure gently removes damaged tissue, allowing the cornea to heal smoothly and reduce discomfort.

Corneal Cross Linking

Used primarily for keratoconus, corneal cross-linking (also called collagen cross-linking) is offered to our patients to strengthen the cornea by creating new bonds within its collagen fibers. This treatment can slow or halt the progression of keratoconus, helping patients maintain clearer vision without invasive surgery.

Keratoconus

Our specialists provide comprehensive care for keratoconus, from monitoring progression to corneal transplant when necessary. Corneal cross-linking, performed in our Indianapolis location, is also available. Our goal is to stabilize vision and maximize your quality of life.

Fuchs Dystrophy

Fuchs’ dystrophy causes a gradual loss of the cornea’s inner cells, weakening the structure and leading to swelling and visual blur. Treatment options include DSAEK, DMEK, or other surgical interventions that restore corneal clarity and long-term visual comfort.

Pterygium

A pterygium is a growth of tissue on the cornea that can cause irritation, redness, or vision obstruction. Our specialists remove pterygia using surgical techniques that preserve corneal shape and prevent recurrence, often supplemented with grafts or anti-scarring methods.
