Preparing for Your Procedure

Before surgery, you will undergo a thorough evaluation with one of our cataract specialists. This visit includes advanced diagnostic imaging to measure your eyes precisely and help determine the best lens option for your visual goals. You will also have the opportunity to discuss lifestyle needs such as night driving, reading, or reducing reliance on glasses. Our team will review your medical history and medications and provide pre-operative instructions tailored specifically for you.

Most patients begin using prescribed eye drops before surgery. These drops help prepare the eye, lessen the possibility of infection, and ensure a smooth procedure. You will also receive a detailed checklist, including when to stop eating and drinking before arrival at our ambulatory surgery center.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery

When you arrive at your nearest state-of-the-art Eye Surgeons of Indiana center, you will be greeted by our surgical care team, who will review your information, answer any last-minute questions, and help you settle in. Advanced surgical techniques allow a fast and comfortable experience for most patients. An intravenous sedative can be administered to help you relax, and in nearly all cases, eye drops are the only anesthesia needed. A board-certified anesthesia provider is present for every procedure to ensure your safety and comfort.

During the Procedure

Your surgeon will use a gentle, microscopic technique to remove the cloudy cataract and replace it with a clear artificial lens. You will receive a sedative to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.

You may notice light and slight movement, but you will not feel any pain. The surgery itself usually takes only 10 to 15 minutes per eye. Although the procedure is quick, plan to be at the surgery center for about two hours to allow time for preparation and recovery.

If you are choosing an advanced option—such as laser cataract surgery or a premium intraocular lens—your surgeon will review all the details with you beforehand so you know exactly what to expect.

Recovery After Cataract Surgery

After your surgery, you will be allowed to rest in one of our comfortable surgery bays or recovery rooms. You will remain under observation to ensure all is well before you are released to return home for the day. If you need a ride, ask about our post-surgery driver service.

Visible Improvement on Day One

Most patients notice an improvement in vision within the first 24 hours. Colors may appear brighter, details sharper, and glare significantly reduced. Your doctor will let you know when it is safe to resume activities such as driving, typically after your first post-operative visit, the day after surgery.

A Quick Return to Normal Activities

Strenuous activities should be avoided the day of surgery, but normal daily activities such as reading, walking, light exercise, computer work, and household tasks are usually fine to resume the following day. You will use prescription eye drops for several weeks to protect the eye as it heals.

Things to Avoid After Cataract Surgery

We ask that you refrain from engaging in any of the following for two weeks after your surgery, to reduce even the slightest possibility of infection while your eye heals:

  • Rubbing or touching your eye
  • Lifting heavy objects or bending over with your head down
  • Engaging in strenuous exercise or activities
  • Swimming or visiting hot tubs/saunas
  • Using make-up, soap, or other skincare products around the eye

Long-Term Expectations and Follow-Up

Your vision will continue to improve over the first few weeks as the eye adjusts to the new lens. Follow-up appointments allow your doctor to monitor healing, fine-tune your care, and ensure optimal results. If you received a premium lens option, you may notice additional improvements in reading vision or reduced dependence on glasses. Many patients describe cataract surgery as life-changing, restoring the clarity and visual freedom they had been missing.
