A recent article on the Bloomberg news website reported that Advanced Cell Technology Inc. was cleared by the FDA to move forward with human trials using embryonic stem cells to treat dry macular degeneration (dry AMD). If successful, this would be the first therapy to treat tissue loss (atrophy) due to dry AMD. This would be a tremendous breakthrough for hundreds of thousands of patients in the United States alone. If the treatment is successful, however, it will still be years before it would be approved for widespread use.
