Finding Yourself At Arm’s Length from Reading Material?

After 40, a common vision change begins affecting nearly everyone. You might notice yourself holding books farther away, zooming in on digital devices, or avoiding fine print altogether. This condition, called presbyopia, happens when your eye's natural lens becomes less flexible with age. The result is difficulty focusing on close objects – even for people who've never needed vision correction before. Unlike many health conditions, presbyopia can't be prevented through lifestyle changes or nutrition. It's simply part of your body's natural aging process that eventually affects everyone.

Presbyopia can be frustrating as it can cause many to feel suddenly dependent on reading glasses, struggle with daily tasks that were once effortless, or feel prematurely aged by this visual limitation. But there's good news – with modern vision correction options at Eye Surgeons of Indiana LASIK Center, you don't have to accept these limitations as your new normal.Advanced solutions are available that can restore your visual freedom and eliminate the constant hunt for reading glasses.

Who is a Good Candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)?

  • Any patient who is over age 40-50 who is nearsighted, farsighted, or has astigmatism
  • Want to reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contact lenses
  • Anyone who is nearsighted, farsighted, or has astigmatism, who has early cataracts (clouding of the lens)
  • Want to treat presbyopia with an implant
  • Are looking for an alternative to LASIK

What Happens During Refractive Lens Exchange?

RLE is a 15-minute, painless outpatient procedure. First, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic drops, and you will be given a sedative to help you remain comfortable. The Refractive Lens Exchange procedure is, in many ways, like cataract surgery. Your eye’s natural lens is removed through a very small incision and replaced with a customized artificial lens implant. The tiny incision in the front of your eye typically heals naturally without stitches. Many people experience improvement in their vision within the first day or two after the procedure, allowing them to gain greater visual freedom.
