The LASIK Center Clearer Vision Starts Here

What Is LASIK?

LASIK eye surgery is a popular and effective way to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Our experienced ophthalmologists use a laser to reshape the cornea, allowing light to focus properly on the retina. Patients notice significantly clearer vision within just a few days of treatment.

Am I a Candidate?

Before deciding on LASIK, we recommend a consultation with one of our eye doctors to discuss your individual needs. Our goal is to help you achieve the best possible vision and overall eye health.

Am I a Good Candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is a safe and effective procedure for most adults, but proper candidacy is crucial for achieving the best results. You may be a good candidate if:

  • You are at least 18 years old
  • Your prescription is stable for at least one year
  • You have realistic expectations about what LASIK can achieve
  • Your prescription falls within treatment guidelines
  • Your eyes and overall health are good
  • You are not pregnant or nursing

Certain factors, including age, dry eye syndrome, and corneal thickness, may affect LASIK candidacy. At Eye Surgeons of Indiana, we evaluate each patient individually and offer alternative procedures when LASIK is not recommended, allowing most patients to find a solution for improved vision.

Benefits of LASIK

Simplified Daily Routine

LASIK helps eliminate the inconvenience of glasses and contact lenses—no cleaning, no storage, no constant adjustments. Imagine experiencing clear, effortless vision without all the daily hassles.

Enhanced Active Lifestyle

Enjoy sports and physical activities without worrying about glasses slipping or contacts getting in the way.

Rapid Recovery

Most patients return to normal activities, including work and driving, within a day. LASIK’s quick recovery makes it ideal for busy lifestyles.

Cost Savings Over Time

Although LASIK requires an upfront investment, it often reduces the ongoing costs of glasses, contacts, solutions, and supplies. Flexible financing options, including CareCredit, make LASIK accessible and manageable for most.

The LASIK Procedure

We use the Alcon Refractive Suite, the fastest and most technologically advanced laser system in The United States. The Wavelight FS200 femtosecond laser creates a customized and precise corneal flap. The Wavelight EX500 excimer laser is then gently applied to remove a precise amount of tissue from the cornea. The flap is then placed back down, where it's left to heal on its own.

Introducing Topography-Guided Contoura® LASIK

At Eye Surgeons of Indiana, we offer Contoura LASIK, an advanced topography-guided treatment that maps up to 22,000 unique points on your cornea. This highly precise system creates a fully individualized treatment plan tailored to match the microscopic contours of your eyes.

The result is often sharp, clear vision with reduced irregularities, often providing patients with a visual experience beyond what glasses or contacts can offer. Contoura LASIK ensures your treatment is completely personalized for optimal outcomes.

Offered Alternatives to LASIK

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Unlike LASIK, PRK does not involve creating a corneal flap. The laser reshapes the surface layers of the cornea to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It’s an excellent option for patients with thinner corneas or irregular corneal surfaces. Recovery may take longer than LASIK, but most patients achieve 20/20 vision or better.

Topography-Guided LASIK

Topography-guided LASIK, also known as Contoura® LASIK, is a highly precise LASIK technique that maps thousands of points on the cornea to address irregularities and improve vision quality.

This approach is beneficial for patients with corneal irregularities or those seeking the sharpest possible vision. Topography-guided LASIK can provide visual results even better than glasses or contacts. This advanced treatment reduces higher-order aberrations that standard LASIK may not address, improving night vision and contrast sensitivity.

Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL)

For patients with very high prescriptions or corneas that are too thin for laser vision correction, implantable collamer lenses (ICL) may be an excellent alternative.

ICLs are placed inside the eye, working with your natural lens to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. The procedure is reversible and designed to provide clear, sharp vision with a quick recovery period.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

RLE is a vision correction procedure in which the eye’s natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

RLE is often recommended for patients who are not ideal candidates for LASIK or PRK, especially those with very high prescriptions or age-related changes in their natural lens called presbyopia. The procedure provides long-term, stable vision correction and will prevent cataract development in the future.

LASIK Frequently Asked Questions

Does LASIK hurt?

No. LASIK is generally well tolerated. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes and is performed using numbing drops and mild oral sedation. Most patients do not experience significant discomfort.

Why do I need to stop wearing contacts before LASIK?

To achieve the best results from LASIK, contact lenses must be discontinued prior to evaluation and surgery. Contact lenses can temporarily reshape the cornea, which may interfere with accurate measurements needed for precise laser treatment.

Is LASIK safe?

The FDA has approved LASIK as a safe and effective procedure. In fact, LASIK is one of the most studied elective procedures available. It is important to understand that LASIK is not safe for everyone. Some people are not candidates and, if treated, could have less-than-optimal results. Always receive a thorough pre-operative evaluation with an experienced provider to determine if LASIK is right for you.

Is LASIK a permanent procedure?

One of the things that makes LASIK so attractive to patients is knowing that it’s a permanent procedure. Once you have your cornea reshaped, your vision is permanently altered. Age-related changes may still occur over time.

How soon will I see clearly after LASIK?

Many patients notice improved vision the same day. Full visual clarity usually develops within a few weeks.
