Annual Mission to Honduras a Success

Published Wednesday, March 10, 2010 7:00 am

Dr. Damon Dierker and Dr. Kevin Waltz completed a medical mission trip to Honduras in late February. The Indiana chapter of VOSH (Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity) has been providing eye care to this Central American country for over 30 years. This year’s mission was based in Choloma, just north of San Pedro Sula (the country’s second largest city). Eleven optometrists, aided by students from the Illinois College of Optometry and approximately two dozen support staff, examined more than 3000 adults and 1000 children over the course of four days. Thousands of patients received donated prescription eyeglasses, sunglasses, and treatment for conditions such as dry eye and conjunctivitis. Dr. Waltz, assisted by Michelle from Surgical Care Center, lead the surgical team which performed cataract surgery for 48 grateful patients.
