Dr. Orr led a medical mission to the Lake Amatitlan area, near Guatemala City. This area is still recovering from the effects of Hurricane Mitch, which devastated Central America in 1998. Working with Dr. Elry Orozco, a local Lutheran physician and pastor, Dr. Orr and Dr. Brian Duvall (Seattle, WA) provided eye care and glasses for approximately 160 local residents. This mission, sponsored by CALMS (Central American Lutheran Mission Society), also aims to spread the Word of Christ throughout the region.
Dr. Dierker and Dr. Waltz completed another successful mission to this impoverished Central American country. This year's mission was based in Choloma, just north of San Pedro Sula. Eleven optometrists, aided by students from the Illinois College of Optometry and support staff, were able to provide eye care for more than 4000 people. Dr. Waltz led the surgical team that performed 48 cataract surgeries. Michelle from Surgical Care Center was the lead surgical assistant. VOSH Indiana has sponsored this mission for over 30 years.
Dr. Dierker and Dr. Waltz participated in the VOSH Indiana trip to Santa Cruz de Yojoa. They were part of a team that provided examinations, glasses, and medical care to nearly 3500 people. In addition, Dr. Waltz led the surgical team, assisted by Michelle from Surgical Care Center. More than two dozen patients were given the gift of sight through modern cataract surgery. This mission was sponsored by VOSH Indiana.
